  • Schedule regular dental check-ups

  • Chose the right dentist

    • some dental waiting rooms might be too noisy for children, which worsens their anxiety

    • try to find a pediatric dentist who specializes in dental anxieties compared to a dentist who is good with kids

  • Give fair warning

    • tell them about their appointment sooner than later

    • encourage them to ask questions or you if the child is doing a procedure you can ask your dental professional for more information

  • Talk about dentistry in a less intimidating way ("drilling" vs "cleaning" teeth)

  • Reassure them during the dental visit

  • Set a good example

    • talk about your own dental experiences in a positive way to avoid a negative pre-conceive notion about visiting the dentist as an adult to your child  â€‹

  • Emphasize good oral hygiene at home

    • encourage them to brush twice daily and floss (especially at night)

    • you can make a game out of it or even a chore where they can earn money

  • Play pretend with your child before dental appointments as practice

    • pretend that you are the dentist and they are in the chair

    • by associating dental care with a creative outlet for kids, they are more likely to view going to the dentist as a positive experience

It is important to teach children about how to maintain oral health and to have a positive outlook on visiting the dentist. It will help them later on when as they grow to become more confident with their health and smile

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) “About 1 of 5 (20%) children aged five to 11 years have at least one untreated decayed tooth, one of seven (13%) adolescents aged 12 to 19 years have at least one untreated decayed tooth and children aged five to 19 years from low-income families are twice as likely (25%) to have cavities, compared with children from higher-income households (11%).”

A fun song to play to encourage kids to brush their teeth!

Here is a great example of a family who teach their children about going to the dentist!
